Whole Turkey Tail fans, cut pieces and powder may share the same species, but they serve different commercial routes. Each format needs its own identity evidence, morphology or particle-size description, packing method, sample reference and receiving check.
A useful comparison begins with the buyer’s intended channel and process. Written definitions and retained samples should be approved before price, yield or presentation are compared. The brief should also record fruiting-body basis, origin, drying and cutting route, intended pack size and the receiving method. Those details help the supplier select a representative lot and prevent visually attractive whole fans from masking the variation present in pieces or powder.
Confirm species and fruiting-body basis
Use Trametes versicolor consistently on the specification, sample label, quotation and batch documents. State the material basis and processing stage, and do not treat a similar banded polypore as interchangeable.
Identity controls should be agreed before format and price comparisons.
Use whole fans for visible morphology
Whole dried fans preserve concentric banding, thin fan shape and a porous underside for visible inspection. Agree colour range, fan-size distribution, integrity, attachment-point tolerance, fragments and foreign material.
Protect presentation material from crushing and moisture.
Define pieces as a controlled input
Pieces need a written size range and a clear relationship to the approved whole grade. Buyers should state whether mixed fan fragments and attachment points are acceptable for extraction or milling.
Specify permitted fines and minimum usable piece size.
Treat powder as a processed ingredient
Powder requires a defined milling input, mesh or particle-size expectation, moisture protection and packaging suited to fine material. Original morphology is no longer visible after milling, so identity and batch records carry more of the receiving decision.
Confirm whether it is plain milled material or concentrated extract powder.
Compare handling and production yield
Whole fans, pieces and powder behave differently during inspection, extraction, blending and packing. Evaluate breakage, dust, preparation time and usable yield in the intended process.
A lower unit price can create higher handling cost if the format is unsuitable.
Match packaging to physical risk
Whole fans need crush protection, pieces need containment of fragments, and powder needs an effective moisture and dust barrier. Inner liners, pack weight and cartons should reflect those risks.
Labels must preserve product name, lot, quantity and storage information.
Approve each format separately
Do not use one sample as the reference for every format. Whole fans, pieces and powder should have separate samples, specifications, batch identities and permitted variation.
This separation supports repeat orders and investigations.
